More Wolves

Howdy,

It's been a bit slow going with blogging lately but that doesn't mean to say I haven't been getting some hobby hours in here and there.

With the release of the new Wolf models I've headed back to some of my old favourites and decided to paint what I have Wolf wise before spending some hard earned cash on some more of the little plastic buggers.

Melts in your mouth not in your hand!

This is the latest Grey Hunter I have finished off. Pretty standard paint out, putting a bit of emphasis on the muzzle of his Multi Melta. I'm a fan of keeping the weaponry quite subdued, its a weapon after all it doesn't need loads of bright colours drawing the attention away from the main body of the model.

Ive used my now trusty 'composure' picture to show off some of the detail in the model, one of the worst bits about painting this guy was 'losing' my squig orange paint. As i use this in the scheme for highlighting the reds I had to make do with fire dragon bright. When I was painting I noted down the scheme I used. As it had been a while since I had painted any Wolves I wanted to make sure I didn't want to make that mistake again. 

Ive also spent some time getting into Instagram and seeing what people are up to using that platform of social media. Ive lost hours just looking at pretty pictures, and some not so pretty ones too.

Flying high

Howdy,

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer, I know I am. The only down side to a great summer is that the hobby time tends to decrease.

I also find that I begin to start lots of projects and have lots at my work desk that just needs finishing off. At which point, typically, more wolves are released and I want them all!!

So painting wise I've been tinkering with an Imperial Guard pilot.

Secret Cargo

The pilot was from a polar auction site win where I bought a job lot and found this guy headless and armless. So I set about using a scout bolt pistol and a random guardsman head to build him back up.

Overall I'm pleased with the paint job, 

greatcoat and armour contrast brilliantly and I like the vials or data cards that he is transporting.

A bit of red

Its been a while! I've been a bit rubbish at keeping up with the posting in July. Thats not to say that I haven't been busy. As its been the build up to the summer holidays its been a bit of a hectic time both at home and at work. 

On the painting side, its been a throw back to the rogue trader days with a chainsword wielding marine.

I found some images on the inter web and decided to go with a Blood Angels scheme

Grey Knights

Howdy,

Time is flying by at the moment and I keep missing getting a post a week out which was a mini goal for May, June and July.

Its been hot again and that has meant having to hobby late at night and early into the morning!

Still it hasnt been all that bad with Her Indooors keeping me company we have ploughed through some great audiobooks and been cracking on with our respective hobbies.

I was given these guys as a Christmas present (yup it takes me that long to get through the to do list), and I felt it was time to give them a go.

I used a tutorial that I found on Tale of Painters to help me.

The big challenge was the Force Weapons, which I was dreading, it seems like I gave them a fairly good go and I was pleased with the results. I think I will be using the blending technique a fair bit now that Ive built up the confidence to use it.

I wasn't brave enough to use a NMM technique on the armour, however I do like the results.

I even invested in a pin drill to drill out the gun barrel's 

I think that this guy is my favourite out of the five. He has a bit of a 'come and get it' attitude about him

Yellow Fever

Howdy, bit of a belated post this week, but there has been lots going on so not a great deal of time to sit and paint. And its been quite hot in the UK again this week. And the World Cup has started. I must admit I do like football (soccer) but the one thing that bugs me is the tedious link that every TV or radio advert now has with the sport. It was a bit of a running joke in our family that we would get a new TV set just for the World Cup but now its absolutely everything!! I even heard an advert on the radio for a loan company basically telling you to get a loan so you can sit on your World Cup sofa, drink your World Cup endorsed beer and watch the football on your new TV. Incredible.

Anyway rant over.

Here is the latest finished miniature. Its an old school metal cyclone terminator. I ventured back into the realms of yellow and painted him up as an Imperial Fist. I like the look of this model, I know the old metal figures are a bit stiffly posed but they are addictive!

All sides are shown in the composure shot, I attempted (in the loosest sense) some scorching on the missile launcher vent ports. All other details were completed in pretty standard colours. I enjoyed painting the targeter and tried to showcase some of the unloved colours from my paint collection. I finished him off with an Imperial Fist transfer on his right shoulder pad.

 Ive also looked around and found a range of backgrounds to help with the photography side of the hobby. I figure its a bit pointless spending hours painting them if I'm not expending enough effort in photographing them. I think the grey marble effect works really well with the yellow, it also looks a bit 'moonscapey'

Finally here is a group shot with the Fists I painted from the old Space Crusade game.

Hopefully I'll get a bit more painting done over the course of the World Cup, after all I have my new World Cup paint brush to use!

Suns out. Guns out

Hello,

Its been fairly sunny in the UK for the past couple of weeks so thats meant a fairly quiet time on the hobby front for a couple of reasons. Firstly we have been doing other things as a family and secondly its been roasting hot in the little corner of our craft room that I occupy. Our craft room is in the roof of the house so it gets more than a little warm.

I have managed to finish some more Wolves, this time Grey Hunters. Here they are with their guns out! Ive also been trying to use thinner/thinned down paints. I noticed that with the heat they are getting a bit gloopier (possibly a made up word) or to be more technical the viscosity has increased. (Education coming in handy) Ive painted these guys with edge highlights, these are similar to the rest of the Wolf army thats coming along nicely. Im contemplating putting together some group shots soon.

In a break from the norm I haven't included a composure faux 360 degree shot, instead just some individual shots of each hunter

Hopefully I'll get some painting done in the evenings over the summer,  I also mentioned a couple of blog posts ago that I'm working on another mad idea. Heres a link to what I've signed up for. The training is going well so far!

Gone Rogue

A bit of a belated post. I usually try to get sorted out and blog on a Sunday but I got a bit wrapped up catching up with an old friend and then had a lazy Monday.

After Logan was completed I was wondering what to do next. It's not like I haven't got lots to choose from, what from auction buys to little things I've picked up here and there I've probably got a line of at least 50 miniatures waiting to have some paint splashed on then. Its true what people say it gets addictive!

I looked to the past for inspiration and began to play around with some old school Rogue Trader marines. I can remember getting the box set of these guys and painting them up as Ultramarines. I even recall playing a 40K game with some mates, we had Orks on one side and the might of the Emperor on another. The only problem was we were set up on a table about 6 foot apart and played for about 2 hours before the first shot in anger! I think that was where my gaming career began and ended!

Anyway here is what I came up with......

Old School

First up I stuck with Wolves, a relatively quick and easy paint later he was completed.

Next up I experimented with some red and a Blood Angels Trooper, I followed the GW scheme and was pleasantly surprised with the results, I think the glaze make a difference, giving a richness to the red. Overall I really like this guy, I even freehanded his blood drop on the shoulder pad.

Last up came a tribute to the army I had when I was around 14, an Ultramarine with a rocket launcher. The launcher itself was a bit battered but it added to the old school feel. again the rich glaze adds to the model.

Finally a group shot to round off. Ive enjoyed my revisit to the past and still have around 12 of these guys still left to paint, I'm tempted to paint individuals in all the chapter colours as a bit of an old school tribute. I have been reading a few blog posts with old school lead and Rogue trader stuff recently and I'm really taken with it. One to note is Danny K's blog Hand of Junk where he is doing some really cool stuff with Combat Cards. Everyone must remember those!

 

I do need to get some better backgrounds for photographing so if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to comment!

Oh and I've also learnt how to spell rogue correctly!

Firstly "Hello" To my new followers! After my brush with Chaos I've gone back to the old favourites. I bought the Logan Grimnar model from a popular auction website. A snip at £ 1.00 previously painted with base coats I set about painting him. Infact I've been painting him off and on for about 3 months, using some of the other models as test subjects for different techniques and finishes. So here he is in all his glory.

They came from the Warp II

Things have been a bit slow lately, caused by a number of factors eating into hobby time. What with work, life and another mad idea I've had there hasn't been a lot of love for the plastic.

Finished Warp Talons

On Sunday the squad of Warp Talons was completed. I must admit I hadn't expected to enjoy painting something so detailed. On went the audio-book and hours flew.

Base Coats and a messy work desk

Basic base coats were applied to the two remaining members of the squad. I attempted when assembling them to keep them as similar to the poses used in the GW literature (and on the box) 

Washed and still soggy

Then the same paint scheme that had been used on the previous three was employed to finish the spiky buggers off. Careful observers will have noted the Night Lord shoulder pads that were purchased from FW. Its the first time I've really tried to paint the fine cast resin (despite having several guys waiting to be painted!) and found the coverage OK once the release agent had been washed off.

These guys then met up with their battle brothers for a group shot. Ive enjoyed the trip into the warp immensely. I think I'll have to purchase some more Chaos Marines to experiment with.

They came from the Warp !

So in the last post I was a bit lost in a blizzard of Wolves. I needed something else to re-ignite the painting fire, so I did what any painter worth their salt would do. I sold my soul to Chaos!

At the back end of last year I bought some Chaos Warp Talons / Raptors along with the Dark Angels I've previously painted. Its taken me this long to get around to painting them.

I think its a good thing that I've waited as I really enjoyed the challenge of painting them. Before I began painting them I did a bit of background research of the Warp Talons. I noted that most gamers find them a bit useless, but as I'm not a gamer I'm not too bothered about that. The background mentioned that they had ornate power armour and could stalk their prey through the veil of reality, so I figured that they really needed to be Night Lords. Here is the result.

Got Claws!

I used the paint scheme as described in WD Oct '12 using Kantor Blue as a base coat. Then a wash with Nuln oil, followed by a coat of Kantor Blue. Then Alaitoc blue and Lothern Blue to highlight.

Once I had finished off this guy, I caught the bug and batch painted another two of the squad.

I used some of the edge highlighting techniques I've been polishing and a good solid yellow technique on the butchered marine helmet.

The Talons were painted with a base coat of Memphiston Red then washed with Devlan Mud (an old pot). Final feathered highlights were with Troll Slayer Orange and Flash Gitz Yellow.

I also liked the sound of the Night Lords having skulls on their helms. So that the last thing you would see is a skull and a fury of Talons. That would introduce the fear factor in any opponent!

The champion is painted with a very pale pallor, having been a child of a world that was held in darkness.
